Seeley, John Robert

Seeley, John Robert
(1834–95)
   Historian.
Seeley was educated at the University of Cambridge and he subsequently taught Latin at London University and then History at Cambridge. He is remembered for his Ecce Homo, a popular life of Jesus which became a best-seller. The book was an attempt to present the historical Jesus and it emphasised his ethical teaching at the expense of the supernatural elements in the Gospels. When it first appeared it was disliked by John Henry newman and Arthur stanley, and it was exactly the sort of work which was later condemned so effectively in Albert Schweitzer’s Quest for the Historical Jesus.
